| Southport Flower Show 2007 |

|
|
This year's Southport Flower Show theme was music. With that in mind, we set about designing and building our garden titled Rhythm and Blooms.
As our previous gardens in 2005 and 2006 were very informal in design, I wished to introduce some formality, symmetry and balance with this garden. I also wanted the planting to be more colourfull (as the title suggests) by incorporating more flowering perennials and less shrubs than in previous years.
The musical theme for the design was based around an orchestra's appearance, using dry stone walling to produce tiers to represent the deferent sections of an orchestra. The addition of a music stand on the stone patio showed the suggestion. |

For this project our client wished to have a small, shallow pond with a cascading fall installed in their back garden. The owner was a very keen gardener and had a good idea of what was required.
Firstly, the site was cleared of existing plants. All plants removed were carefully potted up for re-planting later. The site for the pond was marked out and then excavated. Sand and the pond liner where then installed. The back face of the pond was built up with a dry stone wall to create a clean finish. The cascading falls, pipes and pump were then installed. This allowed us to build the rear stone wall with arch. Soil was brought in to bring up the ground levels suitable for planting. Most of the plants in this project were supplied by the client and planted by Westbury Gardens. The front of the pond was finished with a row of 200mm square paving stones. Rear fencing supplied and installed by Preston Fencing.
A very enjoyable project completed in 5 days. |

This extensive project consisted of many elements including:
- Transplant of conifer trees from the garden, re-planted in a new conifer bed.
- Installation of a new patio area.
- Lay and shape two new lawns.
- Creation of a raised bed out of dry stone walling.
- Design and install the 'Grotto' area.
- Installation of a picket fence around garden area.
Our first priority, with this project, was to estabish which plants from the garden to keep. These plants were then transplanted into several temporary beds around the garden. This kept the plants healthy and safe while the project was constructed.
Two main beds were installed along the eastern side of the garden. The first made use of the several varieties of Juniper, Cypress, Holly and Camilia found around the garden. The second bed, to the north of the first, consisted of an established apple tree under planted with flowering shrubs.
We paved the new patio area with fossil mint indian stone. As the customer has several dogs, this choice of paving will not stain or degrade with time.
The pear shaped lawns cover some 125 square metres down the centre of the garden. The larger lawn, nearest the house, creeps around the conifer bed and shrubbery, while the smaller lawn borders the 'Grotto'area.
The raised bed runs down the western edge of the garden. The dry stone for the wall was retained by the customer for several years, before this idea came to mind. This bed will be planted at a later date by the client.
Our client cameupwith the idea for the 'Grotto'. By using stone walling, old root systems, logs and branches, we managed to create a very unique feature. Please look at the pictures in the gallery for a closer look.
Finally the garden was finished with a cottage style picket fence around the garden area. This fencing was designed and installed by Preston Fencing.

| Project - Driveway - Leyland |
|
|
|
|
Our client had an old concrete/tarmac drive, that was structurally sound, but lacked appeal. We were able to save our client a large sum of money by applying DriveDash to the existing surface. DriveDash has been developed from a bonded aggregate that is hard waring and highly decorative. |
|
| Project - Wall - Preston |
|
|
|
|
Our client instructed Westbury Gardens to build a low decorative wall around their front garden and driveway. We provided the client a number of brick samples, they chose a buff tumbled brick as their material. We removed all the old concrete edgings and prepared foundations for the wall. The wall was built to 2 courses high. |

This was a front garden re-design. The original garden consisted of very few plants with slate chippings spread throughout. We started by removing all plants and chippings from the area. Our design was based on a circular central area witha central feature, planted beds would be introduced
surrounding the central circle. Our central feature was a 3 piece rockery planted with alpines. the project was finished with costwold decorative stone. |

In this project our brief was; to create a raised lawned area with walled patio, replace and move existing shed, re-direct the fencing to gain extra space from the top of the drive, improve drainage.
To raise the lawn, we created sweeping, rendered white, walls with soft planting behind. The patio was paved with black slate, sugesting a contempory look.
The planting was comprised from a selection of specimen shrubs and perennials planted for all year round colour. |
